While Sidney Percy usually painted in oils, this painting is a watercolor, a medium he often used to create impromptu works while working in the field, or as studies for larger, complete works. His son called them potboilers because they were a means of putting food on the table while his father created the larger, more time consuming works which brought in the real money. This scene is from Cumberland, an historic county in England bordering Scotland, whose scenery inspired several paintings while Percy visited it in the early 1870s. The back of this painting bears the label of Doig, Wilson & Wheatley, a prominent framer, art restorer and seller with royal patents from Queen Victoria, and King Edward VII, and possibly beyond. As such, we feel confident that Percy indeed produced this lovely view of Cumberland. It is framed in an elaborate gold frame, under glazing, with a liner titling the watercolor, and attributing the painting.

Very Good - for the painting which is bright and clean. The frame is in disrepair, having some losses on the bottom and right as one faces it.
