- Lot Description
This fishing scene might be subtitled calm amidst turbulence, as the main character, an older man attired in khaki and outfitted with fishing gear, stands astride rock outcropping in a rapidly moving stream, calmly calculating his next move. The protagonist appears to be holding a compass in his hand marking his next azimuth. The greenery and fast rushing stream suggests New England, the location of the artist who resided in New Britain, Connecticut. The fisherman's earthy dress harmonizes beautifully with the nature surrounding him. If you like that mid century Field & Stream action and calm, this painting may have your name on it. It is signed Meta Grimm Lacey lower right, and her name also appears on the canvas back. Of the paintings I have seen by her, this one easily rises to the very top. Little information is known about Lacey who may well have been an illustrator and professional painter, but she left a most happy mark with this plein air fishing painting.
