- Lot Description
Although known by other titles, Grinding Maize was plate 9 of Leopoldo's 12 print series Mexican People, a project conducted in collaboration with Reeves Lewenthal of the American Associated Artists. The lithographs were produced 1946-47 and published by Taller de Gráfica Popular, an important graphic artist collective promoting Mexican arts and political reforms, a group which Mendez cofounded in the late 1930s. This genre scene depicts Mexican people grinding corn in an agrarian hut village viewed from a distance. As the Mendez catalogue raisonne states, "A high quality photo-offset reproduction was issued." This print is a survivor of that edition of which an unknown quantity were printed. 1500 - 1700 of the lithographs were produced, and my suspicion is that fewer of the offet lithographs were printed. Framed in grey; matted in white and peach.
