An American portrait of the woman believed to be one of John Turner Hunt's (1781 - 1856) 3 wives, with only two of them likely candidates. John was a cotton dealer born in Virginia colony and dying in or around Macon, Georgia.
His first wife was Polly Stovall (1789 - 1811) whom he married in 1810; his second wife was Ruth Stovall (1797 - 1827) whom he married in 1812. The dress of the woman is early 19th C and could even predate 1810, but 1810 is a very reasonable date.
The note on the back of the painting is addressed to Floy E Hunt (1900 - 1965), which reads "Floy - From the Hunt Family." As such we conclude that the painting descends from Joseph Cooper Hunt, to Egbert Thomas Hunt, then to Edwin Cole Hunt (1897 - 1971). This lineage is purely speculative. The biggest problem with the theory is that Ruth was only 15 at the time of her marriage but the painting could be as late as c. 1815.
If correct, then the subject is most likely Ruth Hunt nee Stovall.
Good - The canvas needs to be restretched and cleaned. Minor losses to frame mostly on gold lining. Painting has had some restoration but the face and body are untouched except for the subject's left hair.
