A vintage carvbed Bambara nyelini female figure from African Mali used in female initiation rites. As our independent appraiser stated:"Carved from a single piece of wood, the female figure stands on a circular, four legged base, the elongated body with angular arms, and bangles, extending down to the sides with a rigid, upright posture, the head with angular headdress above simplified facial features, including recessed eyes and protruding nose, over a chest with prominent breasts, the surface showing signs of wear, cracking, and patina." Further information concerning the Bambara art"Nyelini figures represent an idealised femininity, fertility and beauty, and are used in initiation rights for young girls transitioning into adulthood. They symbolize strength, grace, and social responsibility, as well as embodying the ancestral mother spirit, guiding women in their roles as caregivers and members of the community." This carving dates to mid 20th C.
