(British, 1813-1876)
A panoramic landscape with cows watering and Canterbury in the distance, signed lower left "Niemann", oil on canvas, 18-1/8 x 28-1/4 in.; reproduction gilt wood and molded wood frame, 25-5/8 x 35-3/4 x 3-1/8 in.
Provenance: Cider House Galleries Ltd, Bletchingley, September 20th, 1993, purchased for $5,000 ; Virginia Private Collection
Note: This 19th-century landscape offers a distant view of a cathedral and surrounding town in Kent, rendered with precise architectural detail and naturalistic elements like cattle, vegetation, and figures in the foreground. The painting reflects the style of Edmund John Niemann (1813–1876), a prolific British landscape artist known for his realistic depictions of the English countryside. Originally a clerk at Lloyd’s, Niemann transitioned to a full-time artist in 1839, exhibiting widely across Britain and Europe for nearly three decades. His work, often compared to that of Constable, captured scenes from across the British Isles with natural colors and a softened realism. Though he faced declining health in later years, Niemann left a significant legacy, with works held in major museums including the Victoria and Albert Museum, the British Museum, and galleries throughout the UK and abroad.
This lot is accompanied by a 22ct gold plate Warwick Castle medallion.
