Portrait of a Gentleman, 1813, signed and dated lower left "Greenwood Pinx 1813", oil on panel, 25 x 201-/2 in.; fine period carved gilt wood frame, 33-1/2 x 27-1/2 in.
Provenance: The Cider House Galleries Ltd, April 9, 2003, sold for BP 1,800/ $2,808 (original receipt accompanies this lot); Virginia Private Collection
Note: Ethan Allen Greenwood was a portrait painter, lawyer, and museum proprietor best known for founding the New England Museum in Boston in the early 19th century. A graduate of Dartmouth College and trained in law at Harvard, Greenwood turned to art and became a prolific portraitist, painting hundreds of miniatures and oil portraits during his career. His diary, which he kept for decades, offers rich insights into early American art, society, and museum culture. Greenwood's dual role as artist and entrepreneur helped shape the cultural landscape of early Boston, making him a notable figure in the history of American art and museum development.

Purchased items will be available for pick up or shipping from our Asheville, North Carolina auction facility within ten business days of the auction, or will be assessed a storage fee of $5.00 per day, per item. Purchaser agrees that packing and shipping is done at the purchaser's risk and that the purchaser will pay in advance all packing expenses, materials, carrier fees and insurance charges. At our discretion, items will either be packed by an agent such as a packaging store or Brunk Auctions. Please allow two weeks for shipping after payment is received. Shipment of large items is the responsibility of the purchaser. We are happy to provide names of carriers and shippers if a purchaser so requests. Brunk Auctions will have no liability for any loss or damage to shipped items.
