American School, mid-19th century oil on canvas portrait of Bennett Henderson Hornsby of Kentucky (and later, Nova Scotia). The subject is depicted in middle age with a moustache, wearing a black suit and tie and seated in a red upholstered chair against an indistinct background. Unsigned. Original giltwood molded frame. Sight: 29 in H x 24 in W. Frame: 38 in W x 33 in D.
Note: Bennett Henderson Hornsby was born in Shelby County, Kentucky, to Thomas Walker Hornsby and Frances Henderson. He was the great grandson of Thomas Walker of Virginia, the early explorer of Kentucky. His older brother was Dr. Joseph Lewis Hornsby, whose portrait is also in this auction. According to his tombstone, Bennett Hornsby achieved the rank of Colonel in the Confederate Army, although we have not been able to trace him to a specific unit. Oral tradition holds that he was a spy. In 1863 he departed the U.S. entirely, moving to Halifax, Nova Scotia, where he became a land speculator. He is buried in St. John's Cemetery in Halifax. Note: several items pertaining to this family are also for sale in this auction.
Craquelure throughout. Small patch lower center, in suit area. Blister to lower right near shoulder.
The living estate of Bennett Armstrong, Alexandria, TN. By descent in the family of the sitter.
