Consignor obtained this piece from the estate of her parents in La Jolla, California. Prior, this piece was gifted to her father from his friend and client, Joseph M. Erdelac (Ohio, 1915-2005), the foremost collector of William Sommer's works. American painter Richard Sedlon (Ohio, 1900-1992) praised Mr. Erdelac in Sommer's eulogy, writing, "The art world owes a debt of gratitude to this art patron for bringing to light the inner voice of the artist's soul for posterity." Artworks from the Joseph M. Erdelac Collection can be found in prominent institutions such as the Cleveland Museum of Art, Princeton University, and the Smithsonian's Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden.** This lot is accompanied by Richard Seldon's eulogy transcript for William Sommer**
9.2.25-In my opinion regarding LOT: 1217- please note, I am not an expert on such works so have taken numerous images for your reference, the work is executed on panel and shows two vertical splits, both stable and reinforced from the reverse with added wood strapping,I do not know what or if there is anything under the horizontal strapping, one located just left of center and the other running through the center, see images, a UV light examination reveals an older varnish layer with scattered areas of inpainting, the surface shows some minor abrasions, thickness, and variation in the application of paint, though this may also be inherent to the artist’s technique, the frame is stable and securely houses the panel, with scattered nicks and minor wear as pictured
