Edward John Cobbett (British, 1815-1899) oil on canvas genre painting, "The Fisherman's Family." A fisherman leans against a stone and places his hand on his chin as he watches his wife carry away a net and basket at right. His children -- a boy and a girl -- sit beside him. Signed "E J Cobbett" to stone, lower left. Housed in a giltwood frame with name and title plate. Sight: 29 1/2 in H x 24 1/2 in W. Frame: 37 1/4 in H x 32 1/4 in W.
Overall very good condition. With old repair and retouching to top of girl's hat and stone to her left, 2 1/2 inch x 1 1/2 inch, and to stone to her right, 1 inch x 3/4 inch. Plus scattered, minor retouching especially to center left, in body of fisherman. Canvas is slightly loose in stretcher. Frame with fine cracking plus minor abrasions and losses.
The collection of Charles R. Ragan, KY.
