Scarce Victorian Electrotype parcel gilt tankard by Elkington, Mason & Co., "from the original in ivory in the possession of Henry C.G. Bedford Esq." The tapering body features mythological Bacchanalian figures in relief and a finial of cherub drinking wine, with grapevines encircling the foot. C Scroll tab handle. 11 3/4 in. H. overall. Circa 1850. 2nd through 5th items: A suite of four (4) Victorian Elkington & Co. silverplated candlesticks in the form of Corinthian columns with applied rams' heads at bases, joined by laurel banding, and foliate decoration to lower rims. Removable cartouche shaped bobeches. 12 1/8 in. H. Circa 1870. Note: Elkington & Co. received financial backing from Josiah Mason in 1842, renaming the firm Elkington, Mason & Co. between 1842 and 1861, and pioneered electrotyping as a new method of production for silver plated items. The electrotyping process used an electric current to deposit metal onto an object or cast, and enabled Elkington to reproduce historic objects at a cost that made them affordable for the rising middle class. Elkington exhibited at the Great Exhibition of 1851 with enormous success.
All items overall very good condition. Tankard: slight wear to gilding. Candlesticks: a few very small minor dents to bases.
