David S. Pope (American/New York, fl. 1877-1895) oil on canvas painting, "A Successful Raid," c. 1885. Two boys smile and look toward to viewer as they hold red apples. The taller, barefoot boy at right holds a hat filled with the fruit as he walks away from a fence, behind which presumably grows the tree that the boys plundered. Additional apples fill the pockets of both figures. Signed "David S. Pope" and dated lower right. Housed in a moulded giltwood frame. Sight: 21 5/8 in H x 15 5/8 in W. Frame: 31 3/4 in H x 26 in W. Exhibition History: National Academy of Design Sixtieth Spring Exhibition, 1885. Listed on p. 17 of the exhibition catalog as number 103. Note: This lot includes a 1976 appraisal document. Biographical Note: Although little is known about David S. Pope, he painted a number of still lifes with fruit now in the collection of the Baltimore Museum of Art and participated in National Academy exhibitions in 1883, 1884, 1885, and 1886. The paintings exhibited in 1883 and 1886 were titled "Fruit" and "Peaches," respectively, while the painting exhibited in 1884 was titled "Out in the Orchard." As such, all of his known, extant paintings feature fruit. He lived in Brooklyn, New York at the time of this painting's creation and is listed as living at 896 and 1298 Broadway during the period from 1883-1886.
