Arthur Hoeber (American, 1854-1915), oil on canvas painting titled "The Beach at Concarneau [France]," depicting a young boy seated on a sandy beach in the foreground, and distant ships in the harbor beyond, all under a cloudy grey sky. Signed lower right corner. Giltwood concave frame with rope molded sight edge, channel molded outer edges and carved corners. Sight: 21 1/4 in W x 31 in. H. Frame: 31 in H x 40 3/4 in W. Biography: Arthur Hoeber was known for his landscapes painted in the Tonalist style. He studied at Cooper Union and the Art Students League in New York, and also in England with Sir John Millais. In the 1880s, at Millais's suggestion, he went to France, where he studied with Jean Leon Gerome and Gustave Courtois and exhibited at the Paris Salon. HIs summers in France were spent painting landscapes and rural genre scenes with peasants in the areas around Pont Aven and Concarneau. Hoeber returned to the U.S. in the 1890s and focused on landscapes. His work was exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art and he worked as an art critic for Harper's Weekly, The New York Times and the New York Globe. In 1912 he published a book, "The Barbizon Painterss; Being the Story of the Men of Thirty."
Very good condition with some areas of craquelure. 2" area of restoration with retouch to sky area near horizon, right center, and 1" area of retouch to sky area, left center. Frame also in very good condition, not original.
