Tennessee agricultural presentation pitcher, awarded at the 1907 State Fair as the Grand Silver Trophy prize for "Grand Championship Sow" to J.D.B. De Bow. Silverplated. The presentation inscription is engraved in an Art Nouveau chased cartouche with grapevine border, and the baluster form pitcher features a flaring rim with applied relief grapevine motif which repeats on the circular foot and handle. Marks to underside for Barbour Silver Company of Connecticut. 14 1/2 in. H. Note: This pitcher was awarded to James Dunwoody Brownson DeBow Jr. (1861-1947) of Nashville, a well known breeder of Berkshire hogs. A 1904 article in the Nashville Banner states "Already the hogs from his farm have won prizes at the World's Fair and other contests in which the best in the land competed with them. Mr. DeBow is systematically strengthening his herd all the while for still further conquests and to add to the fame and excellency of the farm." (A copy is available to the winning bidder). DeBow later became a criminal court Judge. His two story stone mansion, Ravenwood, built 1903 and razed in 1947, was located at what is now the entrance to Ravenwood Park in Hermitage, TN, and is memorialized on a historical marker.
A few small dents to body, overall very good condition.
The collection of Hank and Mary Brockman.
