Glacial Kame Culture / Late Archaic Period, 3000-500 B.C. Stark County, Ohio length 6.375 in.
Carved from reddish-brown ferruginous slate; the body is long and narrow with a graceful form terminating with a fantail. The base retains two paper labels, one with the printed numbers 3995, and a later one with the hand inked notation Stark County, Ohio CDXD.
This example was found in Stark County Ohio and collected by Gilbert Dilley. The Dilley collection was not well documented but some of the Dilley collection may be seen in Who’s Who in Indian Relics, Volume 1 pg. 29.

The entire birdstone is covered with prehistoric scratches, sometimes called "work marks", which were not entirely polished out. Otherwise, the condition of this example is excellent.
