Lot of 57 printed speeches delivered by famed abolitionist and philanthropist, Gerrit Smith.
The collection is comprised of 11 printed pamphlets, all in excellent condition, and 46 handbills on a variety of topics spoken about by Smith including slavery, Cuba, Christianity, and more, dating from 1837 until 1872.
Gerrit Smith was a wealthy New York land-owner who felt his fortune was better spent on worthy causes. Smith believed that the Union should be preserved and that the Constitution prohibited slavery, and donated approximately 8 million dollars towards abolitionism. He supported his first cousin Elizabeth Cady Stanton in her efforts for women's rights as well as John Brown. He was a member of the Secret Six who financially supported the raid at Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. Although he was implicated in the scandal, he was pardoned for his crimes after Brown was executed.
Most are in excellent condition with some folds, very few have brittle margins.
