Red cloth, 20 x 28 in. Collection of mid-19th century newspapers, many from the Confederacy during the Civil War.
Herald of Freedom and Gospel Witness, Bethel, CT, Jan. 2, 1833, 4pp. Plus 1p, unknown publication, remainder of paper removed, but contains a list of acts passed by the Confederate Congress on second page, most dating from late 1862; first page has notice of an estate sale including "Negroes, land, stock, &c."
The Spirit of the Age: A Weekly Family Journal Devoted to Temperance, Literature, Education and News of the Day, Raleigh, NC, Jan. 30, 1861, 4pp, but second page has about 1/3 cut off; 1861: Feb. 6, Feb. 27, Mar. 20, April 3, April 10, April 17, May 29, June 26, July 3, Sept. 11, Sept. 25, Oct. 2, Oct. 9, Oct. 16, Oct. 23, Nov. 6; 1862: Feb. 2, 1862, Feb. 12, Mar. 10, Mar. 24, Mar. 31, Apr. 7, Apr. 14, Apr. 21, May 12, May 19, May 26, Jun. 2, Jun. 16, Jun. 30, Jul. 7, Jul. 21, Aug. 18, Sept. 8, Sept. 15, Sept. 29, Oct. 13, Oct. 20, Oct. 27. Many with articles cut out, page tears. The early numbers of this publication are approx. 18 x 25 in. They drop about an inch in both dimensions in September, then to 12 x 18 in October. In Feb. 1861, they come back to 12 x 20, with a small issue on Mar. 31 (10 x 17), again increasing in size in April (13 x 21). Obtaining paper was difficult in the Confederacy, particularly after the Union blockades were in place, so printers and publishers had to adjust their paper sizes. One can follow the lead-up to the war; in March the Confederate States adopted a constitution; in April, there is speculation about what Lincoln is doing at Forts Sumter and Pinkney. Then in the April 17 issue, they mention talk of Confederate siege of the forts. May brought the secession of North Carolina from the Union. By summer, there is poetry devoted to soldiers and the war in the "Poet's Corner." By autumn, rather uncomplimentary terms are being applied to Union troops.
Keowee Courier, Pickens Court House, SC, 4pp. 1859: Sept 3, Sept. 10, Nov. 5.
Southern Banker, Athens, GA, May 3, 186[5], 2pp. First column article on the surrender of Gen. J.E. Johnston to Gen. W.T. Sherman.
Charleston Daily Courier, Charleston, SC, Confederate States of America, 2pp., Feb. 25, 1864.
The Daily Southern Guardian, Columbia, SC, Nov. 6, 1863, 2pp. List of cargo from steamers Alice and Fannie. More drugs than anything else, but also groceries, leather and shoes and dry goods. Plus an auction of cargo from other vessels, this load with more dry goods and clothing, fewer groceries and drugs. Note: in the lists of drugs are items we would today consider spices, such as Cream of Tarter, or dyes, such as Indigo; even Rhubarb is listed as a drug.
The Charleston, Mercury, Charleston, SC, 2pp. 1862: July 30, August 5, Nov. 8, Nov. 10, Nov. 11, Nov. 12, Nov. 13, Nov. 26. 1863: Sept. 1. Military orders, usual classified ads, including rewards for runaway slaves.
The Southern Watchman, Athens, GA, 4pp. 1863: Apr. 1, June 3, Sept. 16, Sept. 23, Oct. 7. 1864: Mar. 2, Mar. 30, May 28, Aug. 3, Sept. 7, Oct. 12, Oct. 26, Dec. 21. 1865: Jan. 18, Feb. 1, Feb. 8, Mar. 1, Mar. 8, Mar. 15, Mar. 29, Apr. 5, Apr. 19, Apr. 26. It was not until the last that word of Lee's surrender is confirmed, but other news of continued fighting still reported.
Uncle Sam. A Weekly Journal of Romance and General Literature: adapted to all Classes of Readers. Boston, MA, 4pp. 1855: March 3, Mar. 10, Mar. 17, Mar. 24, Mar. 31, Apr. 7.
