Palmer, John M. (1814-1876). ALS "John M. Palmer," 2pp, 7.75 x 9.75 in., "Findlay O." February 27, 1861. Addressed to prominent Ohio politician and US Representative John Cary.
A confidential letter urging Representative Cary to support the Northwest Ohio lawyer in his effort to secure a judgeship in the Washington Territory, and remarking upon the deepening sectarian crisis and Lincoln's first inaugural address.
The Honorable John M. Palmer was born in 1814 in Clinton County, NY, before moving to Ohio where he studied at the Granville Seminary. He studied law, was admitted to practice in Ohio in 1841, and in 1852 he was elected judge of the court of common pleas. At the time this letter was written, Palmer was living in Findlay, OH, practicing law with a partner, but evidently he was looking for a change. He writes to Cary, "I wish to say to you, that for reasons I have not the time here to mention, I have resolved to leave Ohio, and settle in Washington Territory, on the Pacific Coast, and after advising with many valued friends, have concluded to ask Mr. Lincoln, for a Judgeship in that Territory...Will you be so kind as to inform me whether, I may be favored with your assistance, in this matter."
Perhaps more interesting, however, are Palmer's comments on the current political situation. Lincoln's first inaugural address was just days away, and Palmer remarks upon what he hopes to hear from his new President: "Let Republicans stand firmly upon those principles upon which we have triumphed; and I hope that Mr. Lincoln will in his inaugural address, plant himself on the Constitution alone, and say in terms that cannot be misunderstood, that the 'Union must and shall be preserved.'"
