Teapot; Native to New South Wales
Earthenware; ht. 7, wd. 10, dp. 6.5 in.
Native to New South Wales / Yes, Botony Bay Tea impressed around the body of the vessel.
Arneson '69 signature incised on base.
This teapot carries the raw visceral and distinctive clay handing that so distinguishes early Funk art by Arneson. Teapots are among his most sought-after objects because he made few in his career and the main group was not available to the market until recently. The title, Native to New South Wales / Yes, Botony by Tea, references Australia’s only semi-tropical tea plantation and one of that country’s least known agricultural projects. How Arneson came to be interested in this and what else the teapot may signify remains, for the moment, a tantalizing mystery.
