Late French Empire Style Carved Walnut Marble Top Commode, c. 1880, the inset highly figured canted corner rouge marble over a frieze drawer above three drawers to a plinth with a lower "secret" drawer, on stepped ogee feet, with ebonized accents overall, H.- 40 in., W.- 43 1/2 in., D.- 19 1/2 in.
Condition consistent with age and use. A pea-size chip is noted in the center and several larger chips are observed along the back edge of the marble. Scattered surface cracks and indentations are seen in the marble. An approximate 1 cm dark depression is observed near the front edge. A white watermark is noted near the front right corner. An approximate ¼ inch gap is seen in the bottom of the top two drawers along the front. A slight gap is noted between the trim and the marble on the back left side. An approximate 3 by 1 inch piece of veneer is lacking from the back left. An approximate 1 inch chip is noted in the bottom of the secret drawer. Trim is lacking on the front of the right foot. Wood beetle holes are seen intermittently throughout. Scattered hairline cracks are observed in the front of the drawers. A vertical filled crack is seen on the right side with a slight warp around it. An elegant example.
