Featured is a suzani from possibly the 1850s-1880s and it is hand embroidery on linen. The word suzani comes from the Persian word suzan which means needle. These tapestries originate from nomadic tribes in the Central Asian countries of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and other neighboring countries. Though it is not definite, it is assumed that this specific suzani is from Uzbekistan. These pieces were traditionally made by brides as a part of their dowry which would be presented on their wedding day. Symbols of luck, fertility, health, and long life are often depicted on suzanis. For this specific suzani, it features a linen backdrop with embroidery primarily in red with other colors used well. The embroidered flowers are abundant and there are pomegranates as well which represents fertility for the bride. The colors used alongside red are black, orange, green, blue, yellow, purple, and what possibly could be white but has changed colors due to age. This piece appears to have been made from different panels which allowed for multiple people to work on it before it was sewed together. To create a suzani, four traditional stitches are used and they are the following: tambour, basma, chain and kanda-khayol. The pattern is first drawn onto the foundation before being embroidered on portable looms and vegetable dyes were used to color them. This piece itself is full of vibrant details and showcases the skill of those who made it. The flowers, vines, pomegranates, and other details are neatly embroidered and are in tune with one another. It measures 90"x66" and features a distinctive border along the edges which feature flowers in various sizes. The decorations are angled at some places towards the corners. The piece is overall well preserved with the predictable condition issues present. The linen has toned throughout the tapestry, there are areas where the dye has faded or is not present, with small holes throughout the piece. Several spots are present and it is not advisable to wash them out without the advice of a professional. The holes are mainly small but noticeable and the spots are in several locations. It is a beautiful piece of history and though it has condition issues, it is very well preserved for a piece from the late 19th century.
