The word suzani comes from the Persian word suzan which means needle. These tapestries originate from nomadic tribes in the Central Asian countries of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and other neighboring countries. This piece appears to have been made from different panels which allowed for multiple people to work on it before it was sewed together. To create a suzani, four traditional stitches are used and they are the following: tambour, basma, chain and kanda-khayol. The pattern is first drawn onto the foundation before being embroidered on portable looms and vegetable dyes were used to color them. There is white thread that shows that the red center was stitched together to the thick black border. The border features medium sized paisleys, zig zags, and straight lines as borders. The center of the suzani has small circles, flowers, small borders to divide segments, and a blend of geometric and paisley shapes. A backing is not provided on the suzani allowing for the hand embroidery to be seen on the underside. The thread used comes in orange, blue, white, brown, and yellow. There are areas which show that this suzani was stitched together once finished. Fading in several areas, there are small holes and wear in areas, the border has faded near the edges, with areas where you can see the backing due to the black border peeling. It measures 53"x100".
