Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s
16 × 19 inches
A remarkable political mola panel worked in three layers of reverse appliqué, appliqué, and embroidery depicting a portrait figure identified by text as a Panamanian political candidate. The bust-length figure is rendered with a large rounded head filled with orange embroidered dots, round pink glasses, spiral ear ornaments, a prominent red nose, and a broad mouth showing white teeth. The figure's raised left hand holds a small watermelon-slice motif, and a multicolored striped tie hangs below the chin. The body is outlined in concentric bands of red, pink, and orange against the black ground.
Multicolored appliquéd and embroidered lettering surrounds the figure: "GALINDO" in large letters across the top, "ALONSO FERNANDEZ" and "DIPUTADO" beneath, "NACIONALISTA" across the midsection, and "PRESIDENTE" in bold letters along the bottom edge. A small Panamanian flag on a yellow pole appears beside the figure, with a second Panamanian flag appliquéd at right — each rendered with the correct quartered red, white, and blue field with four-pointed stars. The designation "3PN" appears on a separate small flag or banner, likely indicating a political party affiliation.
The black ground is densely filled throughout with rows of vertical slits in alternating colors — orange, yellow, blue, teal, lavender, pink, white, and red — creating a vibrant, rhythmic background texture. Fine hand-stitching throughout. An outstanding example of Guna political commentary in textile form.
Single panel on black cotton ground with red cotton backing. Pink fabric border along the lower edge.
