Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s
14 × 16 inches
A richly composed mola panel worked in three layers of reverse appliqué, appliqué, and embroidery featuring bold abstract botanical forms on a deep red ground. Three large rounded seed-pod or fruit forms dominate the composition, each outlined in concentric bands of teal and black and filled with dense internal striping in multiple colors — yellow, orange, pink, blue, lavender, and white — bisected by a central vein line. Sinuous S-curved stems outlined in teal and yellow connect the rounded forms, creating an interlocking organic composition with strong bilateral symmetry.
The interstices are filled with a lively vocabulary of smaller motifs including nested triangles, heart and chevron shapes, small rectangles, horizontal stripe bands, and scattered vertical slits in orange, teal, blue, yellow, and pink. These secondary elements ensure no area of the panel is left unworked. Fine hand-stitching throughout with consistent stitch density. Dense, fully filled composition with sophisticated cutwork featuring smooth curves on the large botanical forms and precise angular cutting on the smaller fill motifs.
Rickrack trim along the upper edge. Decorative printed fabric border visible along the lower edge.
Single panel on red cotton ground with black backing.
