Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s
17.5 × 19 inches
A finely executed mola panel worked in three layers of reverse appliqué, appliqué, and embroidery featuring an abstract botanical composition of exceptional graphic clarity. Four large leaf or seed-pod forms are arranged in a quatrefoil pattern around a central stylized cross motif, their sinuous stems curving outward from the center axis. Each leaf contains an internal vein structure rendered in contrasting colors — blue, yellow, green, and orange — creating a rhythmic variation across the four forms. The central cross element is outlined in green with a small yellow accent, flanked by tapered triangular stems extending to the upper and lower edges.
Six rectangular cartouches with geometric grid patterns occupy the corners and sides of the composition, each rendered in a different color combination — orange, yellow, green, and pink — providing strong angular counterpoints to the curving botanical forms. The interplay between the organic leaf shapes and the rigid corner elements demonstrates masterful compositional balance.
Worked on deep red cotton ground with layers in black, green, orange, blue, yellow, pink, and red. Exceptionally fine hand-stitching throughout with very tight stitch density. The composition demonstrates sophisticated cutwork with smooth, controlled curves on the leaf forms and precise geometric cutting on the corner elements. Highly controlled composition with strong bilateral symmetry.
Single panel on red cotton ground with black backing.
