Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s
16 × 19 inches
A richly detailed narrative mola panel worked in three layers of reverse appliqué, appliqué, and embroidery depicting a multi-figure jungle scene populated with animals, plants, and spiritual beings. In the upper left, an anthropomorphic figure with pointed ears, embroidered facial features, white teeth, and a yellow-outlined spotted body stands upright among vegetation. In the upper right, a large animal with a prominent round eye surrounded by embroidered spiral stitching, an open mouth with white teeth, vertical yellow and black striped body, a sawtooth green dorsal ridge, and a curled tail strides across the field. At center, a large plant rises with radiating leaves in pink and green bearing embroidered vein patterns, a blue oval fruit or seed pod with green dotted fill, and a bright yellow hand-shaped form suggesting a banana or plantain bunch. In the lower left, a small black jaguar with pink outlining, embroidered facial features, and a spotted body crouches near the ground. A reclined human-like form in orange with embroidered detailing occupies the lower center, resting on a blue-edged ground line with green dotted fill. At lower right, a mushroom-like form with a blue cap bearing a red embroidered star rises beside leaf shapes with multicolored embroidered veining. Densely scattered multicolored triangular appliqué elements in blue, yellow, orange, pink, green, teal, and purple with black outlines fill the open areas of the magenta ground, creating a vibrant atmospheric field. Fine hand-stitching throughout with consistent stitch density. Dense, fully filled composition with an expressive, painterly quality. Single panel on magenta cotton ground with teal cotton border along the lower edge and teal backing visible. Provenance: From the Parker & Neal Collection
