Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s
13.75 × 18 inches
An exceptional mola panel worked in two layers of reverse appliqué, appliqué, and embroidery depicting two large hummingbirds facing each other with wings outstretched, feeding from a central flowering plant. Each bird is rendered in deep burgundy/red with dense rows of multicolored U-shaped embroidered feather patterning across the breast and body, a round white eye with black pupil, and a long pointed beak meeting at the flower. The wings extend dramatically upward and outward, filled with bold multicolored horizontal striped bars in blue, pink, yellow, green, purple, and orange against black. The fan-shaped tail feathers splay downward with similar multicolored striping. A central scalloped flower or fruit form hangs between the two birds with vertical striped fill and pendant embroidered elements. Leaf-shaped motifs with concentric chevron patterning in blue, green, pink, orange, and red are scattered among the wing tips and lower corners. The surrounding field is filled with multicolored vertical bars in green, pink, yellow, purple, and teal against the black ground. Worked on black cotton ground with orange outlining throughout creating a warm, luminous framing effect. Fine hand-stitching throughout with consistent stitch density. Dense, fully filled composition with sophisticated cutwork and strong bilateral symmetry. The dynamic wing positions and convergence at the central bloom create a sense of movement and energy. Single panel on black cotton ground with orange backing visible.
