Letters and documents by the great Cherokee leader John Ross are distinctly uncommon in commerce. Skilled in politics, his lengthy career as Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation encompassed the Trail of Tears and the Civil War.
The first document is an extraordinary and altogether heartbreaking account of the death of a young member of the Stapler family, Mary F. Stapler, a cousin to Mary B. Stapler, Ross's second wife. It is written to her mother. Young Mary (she was but nineteen), who had recently arrived, was tutoring the Ross children. The unfortunate woman had a spark fall on her clothing, whereupon she ran out into the yard for help; her dress then fully ignited, and she was fatally burned. Such deaths were not uncommon; crinolines in particular were especially combustible and a frequent cause of fatalities. Ross typically kept his drafts, heavily corrected with lines through words he wished to change, and would write out and send a fair copy. The second item —the pay voucher —is of special interest because it pertains to the secondary school system established by Ross.
