[TYPE SPECIMEN]
Bound volume containing issues of The Typographic Advertiser from Volume IV, January 1859-volume XV, no. 2, 1870 (with hiatuses). Philadelphia: L. Johnson and Co. [later MacKellar, Smiths & Jordan], 1859-70. Contemporary calf, gilt lettering to spine; 13 x 10 inches (33 x 25.5 cm); 97-144, 153-240, 249-316, 325-340, 349-365, 373-404, 413-428 pp., with numerous inserts (the hiatuses missing parts). Binding severely worn, boards detached, some minor staining but generally quite clean, showing the original mailing folds. Sold as a periodical, not subject to return.
An extensive though sporadic run of this visually stunning type specimen issued in periodical form, initially published by the firm of L. Johnson, and from volume XII on by MacKellar, Smiths & Jordan, who took over the Johnson foundry. The publication ran until 1897. This is not to be confused with Wood's Typographic Advertiser, an English publication of similar purpose.
