[MANUSCRIPT]
Vernacular prayerbook in Czech. Western Bohemia: circa 1620 (from dated vellum binding), traces of fore-edge ties. Manuscript on paper. Period vellum, covers lettered "Rorate..." and dated 1620, all edges red. 7 3/4 x 6 1/4 inches (19.5 x 16.5 cm), 254 numbered pp., [duplicate p. 18-19 with different text, perhaps a deprecated prayer, p. 44 omitted, unnumbered leaf between pp. 187-88], plus preliminary and terminal blank leaves, written in Czech in black ink, 21 lines in a regional blackletter script, initials throughout in red and blue (one- to five-line). Binding worn and soiled, ties lacking, the title on the upper cover now almost illegible, the text block detaching from the binding but still holding, pages 166 to end (and a few earlier in the book) heavily toned, presumably as a result of a flawed batch of paper.
The cover date of 1620 provides a terminus ante quem for this manuscript. Vernacular prayerbooks in Czech are quite rare as a class, as more commonly such works were prepared in German or Latin.
