Gertrude Vanderbilt married Harry Payne Whitney on August 25, 1896 at The Breakers, the lavish Newport “cottage” of her parents, Cornelius Vanderbilt II and Alice Gwynne Vanderbilt. The tea set was a wedding gift from Gertrude’s grandmother, Maria Louisa Kissam Vanderbilt (1821–1896), wife of William Henry Vanderbilt and matriarch of one of America’s most powerful families. Known for her quiet influence and devotion to family, she embodied the domestic and social traditions that anchored the Vanderbilt world.
