A Vanderbilt & Whitney Legacy: Property from the Collection of Marylou Whitney & John Hendrickson
Howard & Co., New York, 1896
The spiral-fluted, baluster-form base supporting a detachable five light, four-arm branch, the base and arms with detatchable wax pans, the bases engraved Gertrude Vanderbilt From Her Aunt Margaret L.V. Shepard August 25 1896 . Height 19 3/4 inches, total approximately 253 ounces.
Gertrude Vanderbilt married Harry Payne Whitney on August 25, 1896 at The Breakers, the lavish Newport “cottage” of her parents, Cornelius Vanderbilt II and Alice Gwynne Vanderbilt. Margaret Louisa Vanderbilt Shepard (1845–1924), daughter of William Henry Vanderbilt and aunt of Gertrude, gifted the couple this pair of candelabra, as well as four matching candlesticks (see lot 102). Margaret was well known for her philanthropy, particularly her support of working women, and for giving generously to both charities and family after her husband’s death left her financially strained. She is buried in the Vanderbilt plot at Moravian Cemetery on Staten Island, remembered for a life of social service alongside great family wealth. She and her husband owned Woodlea, a McKim, Mead & White–designed estate built between 1892 and 1895 in Scarborough, New York, now operated as the Sleepy Hollow Country Club.
