SELMAN, JOHN
Executed Warrant for Arrest. The State of Texas vs O. E. Smith. Printed document signed by John Selman, as Constable, Precinct No. One, El Paso County, Texas and J. R. Harper, Justice of the Peace, dated 14th February 1894. 6 7/8 x 8 1/4 inches (17.5 x 21 cm); printed both sides in black and blue and accomplished in ink in the hands of Selman and Harper. Minor toning, but in excellent condition.
The warrant instructs Selman to bring O. E. Smith, who had been accused of burglary, to J. R. Harper, the justice in his case. This was apparently done, as Selman has indicated that the warrant was executed and has signed it accordingly. Selman had an interesting history. Formerly a rustler, he was cleared of rustling charges in Texas and was then elected City Constable for El Paso in 1892. On August 19, 1895, he killed the gunfighter John Wesley Hardin at the Acme Saloon, shooting him in the head from behind. Selman was arrested for the crime but released after a hung jury after pleading self-defense, but was killed in turn on April 6, 1896, in an argument with a US Marshal, George Scarborough, himself a formidable gunfighter. This is a document evocative of the Old West and the porous boundaries between the lawkeepers and lawbreakers.
