PRINCE, RICHARD
Naked Nurses. New York: JMc & GHB [John McWhinnie & Glen Horowitz Bookseller], 2006. The deluxe edition, number 8 of 10 copies only, signed by Richard Prince and with an original photograph in an accompanying sleeve, the book further inscribed by Prince, original pictorial wrappers, 6 x 4 1/2 inches (17 x 11 cm); the color photograph, depicting a nude woman on the back of a Shelby muscle car, is inscribed by Prince to himself as a joke "To Richard from Nurse Shelby" and further editioned on the verso in ink, the image 8 x 8 inches (21 x 21 cm). All housed in the original orange clamshell case of issue. The volume fine, the photograph with a soft crease from misclosing the case but not breaking the surface and currently flattening nicely in a mylar sleeve.
Not to be confused with the trade edition of 1000 copies, this is an astoundingly rare Richard Prince edition, his Naked Nurses, in the edition of 10 signed copies with an original artwork. The release of this work corresponds with an exhibition of Prince's work by the talented bookseller, the late John McWhinnie, at Glen Horowitz Bookseller, a firm long associated with Prince's risque art and publications. Shunned at first, Prince's "nurse' paintings have become his most valuable. This artist book offers page after page of black and white vintage erotic photographs depicting women in sex acts wearing only garter belts; the color wrappers bear the only possible reference to nurses. The inscribed photograph that accompanies the book only further distances the concept from the medical; here Prince introduces us to "Nurse Shelby" which may not reference the nude woman but the muscle car itself. We trace only one copy of Naked Nurses at auction, that being copy number 1 sold at Swann Galleries, New York, 8 June 2010, lot 384 ($13,200).
