Dated 1816
Mounted in its original wooden horizon ring applied with engraved brass meridian, supported on a mahogany tripod stand with outswept legs on brass casters (no compass), the engraved globe decorated with hand-colored constellations, including mythological figures, animals and astronomical instruments, the cartouche reads:
CARY'S NEW CELESTIAL GLOBE, on which are laid down THE WHOLE of the STARS NEBULAE, &c. Contained in the Astronomical Works of the REV. F. WOLLASTON, F.R.S, De la Caille, Herschel, Hevelius Mayer, Flamsteads Bradley&c. London: Made & Sold by J.& W. Cary, Strand, March 1816.
EXPLANATION. Greek letters or figures prefixed to the Stars signify from the British Catalogue a Stroke drawn under the figures thus De la Caille, H. Hevelius, M. Mayer C.H.C Herschel and B. Bradley.
Height 44 1/2 inches, (113 cm), diameter 24 1/2 inches (62 cm).
Condition
Overall with wear, scratches and dents and minor losses consistent with age and use, without compass.
