Notes:
Zedekiah Belknap was born in Ward (now Auburn), Massachusetts and attended Dartmouth College, graduating in 1807. His earliest documented portraits date from the year he graduated. He worked as an itinerant portrait painter throughout Vermont, New Hampshire and Massachusetts for more than 40 years before settling at a family farm in Vermont in the late 1840s. More than 170 portraits are attributed to him.
Condition
Lady is painted on canvas and laid down on board. Although the painting presents very well under natural light, UV examination revealed some moderate and scattered paint restorations, as well as some varnish drip inconsistencies. Gentleman is painted directly on the panel. One vertical each split to the panel towards the left side. Again, the natural light examination looks good, but UV reveals some moderate paint restoration.
