Property of the Smith Family, Spring Island, SC
Description:
5 Miscellaneous Chinese Small Embroidered Panels , comprising a gold embroidered panel decorated with dragons, flowers, and mythological birds (some losses to gold thread, blue silk backing frayed on edges, minor stains), blue and white embroidered panel decorated with butterflies and flowers, 19 1/2 in. x 10 1/2 in. (sun faded, some stains, and losses to silk of blue backing), rectangular panel embroidered with figures at various pursuits, 23 in. x 11 in. (losses to silk, stains, faded, and losses to border), white silk panel embroidered with figures and foliage with partial ribbon border, 44 1/4 in. x 10 3/4 in. (Silk panel in good condition, losses to ribbon border, outer edges of silk with some losses), dark blue panel embroidered with pink flowers, 18 1/2 in. x 19 1/2 in. (Some losses to blue silk, some fraying to embroidery, and some stains).
Provenance: Purchased by Miss Anna Mae Stoever, circa 1924. Miss Anna Mae Stoever, born 1874, was the daughter of wealthy entrepreneur Charles M. Stoever of Philadelphia, the largest manufacturer and dealer on the East Coast of paper for books, newspapers, writing, manilla writing envelopes, and wrapping papers. At 34, she made her first trip around the world where she met Mr. Henry Frederick Wichman in Honolulu, HI, whom she later married in September of 1910 in Brooklyn, NY. After the passing of her husband in 1921, Mrs. Stoever-Wichman began a second world cruise aboard the RMS Mauretania in 1924. It was on this second cruise, where she visited China and Japan, that she acquired these items.Measurements: Height: of gold embroidered: 22 3/4 in. x Width: 14 1/4 in.
