Description:
Charles Landelle (Laval, France, 1821-1908), The Church Door, Viort, Vallee d'Ossan Basses, Pyrenees, Oil on Board, signed Ch. Landelle bottom right, with museum label verso from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Forty Fifth Annual Exhibition, 1868, depicting nuns and children in front of a church door, in a giltwood frame, the frame with stencil 'Goupil & C, Paris'. Frame size: 39 in. x 32 1/2 in. Exhibited the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Forty Fifth Annual Exhibition, 1868, number 256, John Bohlen listed as the Possessor. John Bohlen was one of Philadelphia's foremost citizens and one of its wealthiest in the mid 19th century. Provenance: From the collection of Arthur Warren Kinkade Jr. (1919-1987), prominent banker in Wichita, Kansas, by decent to the consignor.
Charles Landelle was born in 1821 in Laval, France. He studied under the supervision of the painters Paul Delaroche and Ary Scheffer at the School of Fine Arts in Paris. The painter started exhibiting at the Paris Salon in 1841 with religious works and portraits that met a great success among critics and visitors. He was an active member of the Society of French Orientalist Painters and participated in the creation of the Fine Art Museum of Laval, thanks to his donation of some of his works as well as other paintings. At the peak of his fame, he opened the museum in 1895 alongside the French president Félix Faure. (Galerie Ary Jan, France)

Very good condition, minor inpainting comprising of a vertical lie in the full white robe at right and another vertical line in the stipes, other very minor scattered inpainting, paint rubbed along bottom left edge.
