First American edition of abolitionist William Wilberforce's (1759-1833) scathing reproof of popular, cultural, and political Christianity, which he deems superficial and a misunderstanding of true Christian faith. Complete with the list of subscribers, which includes William Tennent, Benjamin Rush, Ashbel Green, William Cobbett, and other notables.
This copy is enhanced by the gift inscription of Reverend Ira Hart (1771-1829) to his future wife, Maria Sherman (1774-1857). Hart was a missionary of the Connecticut Society, which flourished during the Second Great Awakening.
