M1860 light cavalry saber. Chicopee, Mass.: Ames Mfg. Co. Stamped "US / JH / 1860" to the ricasso, "Ames Mfg. Co. / Chicopee / Mass" to the ricasso reverse, "JH / WGJ" to the pommel cap, and "AGM" to the scabbard drag. Overall approx. 42 1/2 in., blade approx. 34 7/8 in. long.
A scarce, sought-after example from the earliest years of production, which would have almost certainly seen combat, in fair condition. Paired with a tight-fitting m1840 heavy cavalry metal scabbard with light gray and brown patination. The blade is overall clean and period-sharpened, and the brass guard is tight, itself with a warm brown patina. The original grip leather has worn away, revealing the grooved wood beneath, and the twisted wire wrap is present but repaired following a separation.
Widely used during the Civil War, the m1860 sabre was considered a lighter, more maneuverable weapon than its predecessor, the m1840 “Wristbreaker.” The light cavalry sabre weighed about 3 1/2 pounds in the scabbard.
