Printed document covering the joint resolutions of Texas. Austin, 16 December 1863. 1 page, 8vo. Docketing to recto.
A list of three joint resolutions from the Texas House of Representatives ordered to be printed by a Mr. Sexton in May 1864. The resolutions were written in December 1863 and argued that the Civil War, specifically the Union going against the Confederacy, was "without precedent in its atrocity and unchristian character". The three resolutions are as follows:
"1st. Resolved by the Legislature of the State of Texas, That now that our presumptuous enemy treads our soil, in heavy numbers and menacing attitude, we bid him a proud and scornful defiance.
"2d. That we pledge to our sister States that in this struggle our authorities and our people will evince a patriotism and endurance as great as the occasion and as prolonged as the conflict.
"3d. That although as a free people we have exercised the rights of criticism upon the acts of our President and his Cabinet, yet we here record our full confidence in the patriotism and ability of President Davis; and do furthermore declare that, if remitted now to our option, we would not exchange him for any citizen of the Confederacy, as the pilot to carry us through the present stormy struggle for liberty, as a people, and for independence as a nation."
These resolutions were reaffirming Texas's support for the Confederate State's cause and Jefferson Davis as the Confederate State's president, while continuing to denounce the Union. This no doubt came after the shift in momentum in the Civil War — while both sides suffered greatly, the Union came out victorious in the Battle of Gettysburg. From here, Confederates were solely playing defense against Union soldiers. Passing a joint resolution such as this was an attempt to regain support in a trying time when faith was wavering.
