Wood and brass handheld telescope/spyglass. With original cap and sliding eyepiece cover. "Captured from a Rebel Signal Officer / Malvern Hill Va July 10th 1864" etched into body. L. 11 1/4 in., extends to 42 5/8 in.
A fine Confederate pocket telescope captured during the Civil War. It was taken at Malvern Hill, Virginia. The site of the final engagement in the Seven Days Battles, Malvern Hill's proximity to the Richmond, the capital of the Confederacy, made it a prime location for garrison and the signal corps as the Federal troops attempted further advances.
A fine relic.
