Outdoor group portrait of Confederate veterans and family members on the front porch of Beauvoir. [Biloxi, Mississippi], July 1926. Visible 22 3/4 x 18 3/4 in., matted and framed to 19 1/8 x 11 1/8 in.
Period typed inscription affixed to reverse: "'BEAUVOIR' / Home of Confederate Veterans located between Gulfport and Biloxi on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Formerly the home of Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederacy. / Presented to the Stone Mountain Memorial Association by Gulfport Chamber of Commerce. / July 1926."
Arranged in front of Beauvoir, the post-war home of Confederate President Jefferson Davis, dozens of Confederate veterans pose for the photographer's lens. Most quite elderly, several are seated in wheelchairs or use crutches, including a figure near the center who lost a leg in combat.
Beauvoir was built by planter and entrepreneur James Brown in 1848 and was the center of a prosperous cotton plantation. After the war, Jefferson Davis moved with his family at the invitation of the Dorsey Family, the current owners. He stayed in a cottage on the grounds where he wrote his memoir The Rise and Fall of the Confederate Government. The house was bequeathed to Davis, and he lived there until his death in 1889.
In 1903, Varina sold the property to the United Confederate Veterans under the condition that the property be used as a home for Confederate veterans (along with their wives and servants) or widows. The property was used for such a purpose until the last Confederate veteran in Mississippi died in 1957.
