Silver gelatin outdoor portrait of William Mack Lee, cook and servant of Robert E. Lee. 8 X 10 1 1/16 in.
A striking portrait of William Mack Lee wearing a jacket festooned with United Confederate Veteran medals, ribbons, and pinbacks. Among them are various reunion medals as well as pinbacks featuring the recognizable portraits of Confederate military leaders, including Robert E. Lee, Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson, and Nathan Bedford Forrest.
William Mack Lee (1836-1932) was formerly enslaved by General Robert E. Lee and emancipated in 1856. William remained with the Lee family as a free man and followed Robert E. Lee through every battle of the Civil War as his personal cook. From his memoirs, William wrote: "I was cook for Marse Robert, as I called him, during the civil war and his body servant. I was with him at the first battle of Bull Run...and was there at the fire of the last gun for the salute of the surrender on Sunday, April 9, 9 o'clock, A.M., at Appomatox, 1865." (History of the Life of Rev. Wm. Mack Lee Body Servant of General Robert E. Lee Through the Civil War. Norfolk, 1918).
He "stayed on Marse Robert's plantation 18 years after the war," and, in 1881, became ordained as a Missionary Baptist preacher, tending congregations in Washington, D.C.; Cantonsville, Maryland; and Norfolk County, Virginia. William remained a devoted supporter of Robert E. Lee and Confederate memory throughout his life.
