Sixth plate half-length studio portrait ambrotype. N.p., circa 1861-1865. Separated full leatherette case with paper mat.
Portrait of a confident Confederate wearing a double-breasted frock coat that appears to be made from jean cloth. The subject sits sideways in a chair, gazing directly into the camera’s lens. The image is remarkably clear; the weave of the jacket is visible without magnification. The photographer applied gold gilt to highlight the brass buttons, making it difficult to identify any device. Although no rank insignia is visible on the uniform, the collar seems to be constructed of polished cotton. Taken together with the apparent use of jean cloth for the bulk of the double-breasted coat, this may indicate a homespun or “local” garment in the style prescribed by Confederate regulations for a cavalryman.
Importantly, the photograph is framed with a plain paper mat, a practice nearly exclusive to southern photography. A significantly more modest alternative to the era's ubiquitous stamped brass mats, simple paper mats are generally accepted as an example of southern ingenuity. As access to photographic supplies dwindled in the Confederacy during the Civil War, artists began using whatever tools were available.
