Confederate cavalry saber. Columbus, Georgia: L. Haiman & Brother, n.d. Overall approx. in., blade approx. 34 7/8 in. long.
A fine example from the workshop of the Prussian-born brothers Louis & Elijah Haiman, perhaps the most prolific swordsmiths in the Southern Confederate States. The sword bears an unstopped fuller and fifteen wraps of single wire over a distinctive, down-turned grip of oilcloth.
Most examples are housed in simple, lapped-seam scabbards. However, this sword is among those complete in original, decidedly higher-quality scabbard with a brazed seam. The brass-mounted scabbards are believed to have been the product of William J. McElroy of Macon, Georgia, under contract by the brothers Haiman for officers' saber scabbards. In this case, the throat is steel.
The blade is overall dark brown in patina and presents characteristic Confederate casting flaws. The grip oilcloth is worn away in places, but the iron wire wrap is solid. The leather washer appears to be a replacement but keeps the blade sturdy nonetheless.
