Sixth plate half-length studio portrait tintype. N.p., circa 1861-1865. Full thermoplastic case with image cut to oval shape.
Portrait of an unknown Confederate lieutenant clad in his grey regulation uniform and a red-tinted sash, which is generally understood to mean that he was "officer of the day." Fancy details on his uniform and cap, in particular the quatrefoil designs on his sleeves, bar rank on his collar, and trim on his kepi, have all been skillfully embellished with gold gilt.
