Wood canteen. With iron bands and strap bands. Cork stopper (possibly later). Inscribed to face "W.H.H." Diam. 7 1/2 in. W. 2 3/8 in.
This is a classic Confederate wooden canteen from the Civil War era, commonly known among collectors as the "Gardner" pattern, referencing the design by F.J. Gardner for the CSA Ordnance Department. These canteens were constructed with simple lathe-turned front and back faces, joined by curved, grooved staves and secured with narrow iron hoops. The hoops are held in place by three cross bands, each raised in the middle and turned up at the ends, which also serve as brackets for attaching a shoulder strap.
