Sixth plate half-length studio portrait ambrotype. N.p., circa 1861-1865. Half leatherette case.
Spectacular portrait of a double-armed cavalryman. His irregular appearance (most notably a beautifully hand-tinted gingham battle shirt) makes it difficult to place him firmly on either side of the conflict. Seated in what appears to be a bare studio or tent, he rests an M1851 Colt Navy revolver across his chest while a cavalry saber hangs from his belt rig. A rectangular buckle on the thick leather belt could provide an important clue to his true allegiance, but the photographer has obscured the device by embellishing the brass with gold gilt.
This photographer was talented, as evidenced by the outstanding clarity and tone of the plate and skilled application of color to his battle shirt.
A centerpiece of any serious Civil War photography collection.
