Sixth plate half-length studio portrait tintype. N.p., circa 1861-1865. Full leatherette case.
A compelling image of a beared Confederate soldier from Alabama armed with both a shotgun - likely his own - and a Bowie knife. This is a very well-composed photograph with the wide-eyed subject seated at the dead center of the field of view. His plain uniform appears to be constructed of a very coarse fabric, and possibly homespun. A close examination of his cartridge box shoulder strap reveals what may be the soldier's initials scratched into the leather near his shoulder. His belt features a desirable brass frame buckle, sometimes referred to as a "Georgia" buckle. (Despite the nickname, soldiers from many southern states used this style of buckle.) Finally, the lid of his cap pouch is bent upwards, which was often seen with frequent use. He was a fighter.
While the man's exact identity is unknown, his connection to the Confederate army is unquestionable: he has a Confederate First National Flag attached to his cartridge box strap. This small keepsake appears to be constructed from (or at least lined with) lace and is tied to the strap with a small ribbon. Outside of light gold embellishment to his uniform buttons, the only color on the plate was applied to this flag, which immediately catches the viewer's eye.
We also know this man almost certainly fought with a unit called the 51st
Alabama Cavalry Partisan Rangers. This regimental association is based on a matching image (not included) of an identified soldier from that regiment. Besides a nearly identical composition, both men have matching equipment - and, most importantly, are wearing the same unique lace-bordered First National flag. The 51st Alabama Cavalry Partisan Rangers, organized in 1862, were primarily tasked with raiding Union supply lines and protecting the flanks of the Army of Tennessee. Serving under General Joseph Wheeler's command, the regiment fought in numerous major campaigns, including Murfreesboro, Chickamauga, and Atlanta, before surrendering at the end of the war.
We note that the image offered here was published in author Lawrence T. Jones III's Confederate Calendar in 1984.
